Medieval painting of a person accused of hearsay being burned at the stake

The Medieval period was brutal, and gory. Death by fire was probably the most painful way of putting someone to death. Burning at the stake was a widely accepted form of punishment throughout most of Europe. The Germans were especially fond of this form of execution. a careless slip of the tongue and one could easily find him or herself on top of a burning pyre.  People who were burned had usually committed an act against the church or church doctrine. Women were often accused of witchcraft or being in league with the devil. A woman living alone with a few cats always aroused suspicion especially if she was also a healer. Life was barbarous and treachery was always around the corner.

A few countries halfheartedly passed laws calling for  the accused be strangled before burning at the stake, but most people were purposely burned alive for the dramatic effect. The burning days had a grisly festival like atmosphere with townspeople bringing their lunch and catching up on local gossip.
