The Abstract Expressionists

 To the Abstract Expressionists followed the earlier Abrstract painters such as Wassily Kandinsky, Alexei Jawlensky, Ernst Kirchner and Paul Klee. Abstract Expressionists typically splash paint rapidly, and with force allowing their feelings and emotions to be transferred directly to paper or canvas. Kandinsky stated "The more frightening the world becomes ... the more art becomes abstract."
