Abstract art is about "passion." Abstract painters typically splash paint rapidly, and with force allowing their feelings and emotions to be transferred directly to their canvas. The painting method often abandons the use of traditional means for the application of color, applying paint with hands, fingers or washes. Kandinsky stated "The more frightening the world becomes ... the more art becomes abstract." Paint is generally applied directly from the tube, favoring pure color from the highest quality paints. The Abstract movement tossed caution to the wind and reality out the window as they used emotive colour, abstract shapes and surface texture to create visual metaphors for modern life. The new movement was built upon the European masters of abstraction, including Wassily Kandinsky, Alexei Jawlensky, Ernst Kirchner and Paul Klee.
