Pierre Bonnard Biography and Interesting Facts

Pierre Bonnard was born on October 3, 1867 into an upper middle-class family in Fontany-aux-Roses, a small village on the outskirts of Paris.

Bonnard's strict and demanding father, Eugene Bonnard, was in the ministry of war. The elder Bonnard flatly rejected young Pierre's dreams of becoming an artist and insisted that young Pierre go into law. Reluctantly the elder Bonnard agreed to finance Pierre's art education at the Ecole Des Beaux-Arts.

Bonnard was a leader of a group of artists, that called themselves the Nabis.

The Nabis were influenced by Japanese color and involved with manipulating color and structure. The word  "Nabis" means prophet.

Pierre Bonnard's lifelong lover was a striking working-class laundry girl named Maria Boursin. Maria preferred to be called Martha. She was his favorite model.

Although Pierre and the beautiful Martha lived together for many years it was not until Bonnard was 58 that the pair became man and wife.
