George Caleb Bingham 1811-1879 American Genre Painter Stylistically influenced by the following painters - John Singleton Copley, John Trumbull, and Rembrandt Peale Education - age of sixteen, he was apprenticed to a cabinetmaker. In 1837 Bingham began his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Later he left to study in Europe. Cause of Death - Pneumonia Description George Bingham's Painting style George Bingham wore multiple hats throughout his long life, including those of American genre painter and politician. He was born into a family of coopers (barrel makers) and tailors near Charlottesville, Virginia. When young George was eight years old his family moved to Missouri. He was one of the most gifted American genre painters and excelled at portraying jovial boatmen sailing down the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. He was well regarded for his intellect and vigorous application of color. His style, like his personality, was straightforward and vigorous, sincere and full of life.
