Description George Bingham's  Painting style

George Bingham wore multiple hats throughout his long life, including those of American genre painter and politician. He was born into a family of coopers (barrel makers) and tailors near Charlottesville, Virginia. When young George was eight years old his family moved to Missouri.

He was one of the most gifted American genre painters and excelled at portraying jovial boatmen sailing down the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. He was well regarded for his intellect and vigorous application of color. His style, like his personality, was straightforward and vigorous, sincere and full of life.
