Good painting is
like good cooking; it
can be tasted, but not
explained. -- Maurice de
Vlaminck The prevailing characteristic of Maurice Vlaminck's work is ominous skies, desolate roads and barren landscapes. His skies are the most spectacular of any painter of his generation. During his fauvist period he favored a pallet of brilliant orange, greens and reds. As he matured he gravitated towards expressive realism and a cool blue palette. He avoided unnecessary detail, instead using dazzling color and strong lines to produce masterful compositions. He felt the composition of colors was as vital as a painting's subject matter in communicating meaning. Maurice Vlaminck's work is high-keyed, exploratory and intense. He explored in his art a new world of passion and vibrancy, but with a expressiveness and profound understanding of color.
